Essential Gutter Care That Doesn’t Involve Cleaning

Gutter guards are effective at keeping dirt, leaves, and other debris outside of your gutters. These things are notorious for causing clogging problems that can greatly affect the efficiency and longevity of both the gutter system itself and your roof.Gutter Care That Doesn’t Involve Cleaning

While cleaning out your gutters regularly is an important maintenance step, it’s not the only thing you need to do if you want proper drainage for your roof. Here are a few more tips from our experts at Patriot Gutters on how to take better care of your gutters.

Hail Damage

The force of impact of falling hailstones can be enough to loosen up even a fairly new gutter installation. Once every fall, around mid-October or November, do a visual inspection from the ground of the brackets that hold your gutters in place. Note any areas that may show sagging problems or brackets that have come loose. Contact your local gutter specialist to fasten these brackets and reinforce them before they become detached.

Snow Damage

Unlike most materials, water actually expands when it freezes into ice. If it does this while inside your gutters, it can damage your gutters. Ask your gutter installer about de-icing options for your existing gutters to avoid this issue. It may also be necessary to properly insulate your attic to avoid ice dam problems and prevent snow from melting off your roof, flowing down to your gutters and downspouts, and refreezing.

Preventing Gutter-Related Problems

As much as possible, do not delay getting gutter repairs for faulty gutters. Overflow problems, for example, can lead to cracks and settling in your foundations, causing a more serious issue in the future. Make sure your downspouts are directed away from your foundation and that the water is drained through either dirt or cement to prevent this type of problem.
